November 27, 2016 (Sunday) First Sunday of Advent. It is also Recollection Sunday and Oblate Sunday. Mary Maher becomes an Oblate candidate. Supper is take-out pizza, a gift from Linda Gant and Janet Collura.
November 24, 2016 (Thursday) The Annual Thanksgiving dinner takes place at the St. Anthony Parish Hall. The Sisters provide the main meal; the salad is from SLU and St. Anthony does drinks, dessert, and the setup for the parish center. Total preparation was for 325 with 91 meals delivered to Catholic Charities, other homebound individuals and 46 to Sunrise Domestic Violence Shelter.
November 21, 2016 (Monday) Pat Hennessy teaches a two-hour food handler’s class in the Multi-Purpose Room. After supper, the Sisters and Barbara meet to discuss this year’s Advent practices. The Advent Reflection booklets that have been distributed will be used; draw a person’s name to pray for daily; draw “Good Deed;” and participate in group sharing on Sundays. There will be an Advent wreath in the dining room and special table prayers for Advent. They will donate their house Christmas funds of $20 per person towards restoration of the monasteries in Italy that were destroyed or damaged by the recent earthquake. They will also make a donation to Heritage Park Nursing Home where S. Helen lives.
November 20, 2016 (Sunday) The Men’s Choir of First Methodist Church of Dade City gives a concert in the monastery chapel followed by a social and refreshments. Tracey Adams becomes an affiliate at Evening Praise.
November 19, 2016 (Saturday) The “So Old, Sew New” crafts class meets in the Multi-Purpose Room today.
November 17, 2016 (Thursday) The Sisters and residents join S. Helen at Heritage Park Nursing Home for a Thanksgiving supper prepared and served by the staff.
November 15, 2016 (Tuesday) S. Roberta attends a meeting of the Board of Sunrise of Pasco County.
November 13, 2016 (Sunday) Saint Leo Prep and Holy Name Academy alumni join the Sisters for Mass at the monastery followed by brunch in the Saint Leo University Cafeteria.
November 12, 2016 (Saturday) Sisters attend a performance of Women on the Move, a play that recounts the history of the Benedictine Sisters of Florida that was written by SLU students. Sr’s. Roberta, Mary Clare and Mary David attend the Saint Leo Prep and Holy Name Academy Alumni Award dinner at SLU.
November 11, 2016 (Friday) The monastery hosts the annual Angels in the Wings luncheon in the dining room. The luncheon honors those who have remembered the Benedictine Sisters of Florida in their will. Guest speaker is Tom Walker, President and CEO of Members Trust. Cindi Strayer is accepted as an affiliate at Evening Praise.
November 10, 2016 (Thursday) Sr’s. Roberta, Donna, Faith Pridmore and Cheryl Chadick hand-out brochures at our table for the Dade City Business EXPO at the Pasco County fairgrounds. At the monastery, the Formation Team meets after supper.
November 9, 2016 (Wednesday) Fr. Garry Welsh of St. Anthony Parish says the 6:30 am Mass. S. Roberta attends a lunch meeting of the Board of the Dade City Chamber of Commerce. The Holy Name Finance Team meets with community accountant Bill Gregg at the monastery.
November 8, 2016 (Tuesday) Election Day with Donald Trump winning the presidential election.
November 7, 2016 (Monday) Benedictine All Souls. The Sisters meet at the cemetery and hold a memorial service for the deceased members of Holy Name Monastery.
November 6, 2016 (Sunday) Recollection Sunday. A video is presented of Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB discussing Chapter 7 of the Rule (Humility).
November 5, 2016 (Saturday) The monastery chapel is the site for the wedding of Miguel Barboza and Cavi Velasquez at 3:00 pm.
November 4, 2016 (Friday) Sisters are the guests of St. Anthony Parish for a performance of “Celtic Flames,” a 2 ½ hour show with 25 performers and featuring the music and dance of Ireland. S. Roberta attends a performance of Standing Room Only, the Tampa Bay Sweet Adelines (barbershop quartet style) Show Choir.
November 2, 2016 (Wednesday) All Souls Day. The Liturgy Committee meets after supper.
November 1, 2016 (Tuesday) Solemnity of All Saints. S. Roberta and Volunteer Barbara attend the “Catholic-Jewish Relations, Internationally and in Florida” Conference at Saint Leo University. Sponsored by the SLU Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies, the main presenter is Rabbi Skorka, known as the “Pope’s Rabbi” (refers to Pope Francis).
October 30, 2016 (Sunday) Community members drive to St. Petersburg to attend the 11:30 am Mass at St. Jude Cathedral where all the Sisters and Brothers are celebrating Jubilees this year in the Diocese are acknowledged. Bishop Lynch presides at the Mass (his last celebration with “his” religious before he retires). There is a buffet luncheon for Jubilarians and guests in Marian Hall following the Mass. Sr. Mary David (50 years in vows) and Sr. Elizabeth Matthai, OSB (newly professed) are recognized at the Mass and luncheon.
October 29, 2016 (Saturday) Saint Leo University President Bill Lennox comes for Morning Praise and Eucharist, breakfast, and then a brainstorming/informational session about future plans for the university.
October 28, 29, 30 2016 Performances of the student original play about the Benedictine Sisters of Florida,“Women on the Move.” All sold-out with an additional added at 2:00pm on the 29th.
The play was performed in the new Black Box Theatre in Benedictine Hall.
October 27, 2016 (Thursday) A group of Sisters attend the Sunrise Domestic Violence Vigil at Agnes Lamb Park in Date City at 6:00 pm. Sr. Roberta attends a presentation from Judge Tepper entitled “Raising America’s Children” at the Dade City County Courthouse.
October 24, 2016 (Monday) Saint Leo University instructor Frank Orlando does a presentation for the Sisters on the local candidates (Florida) and amendments which will appear on the November ballot.
October 16, 2016 (Sunday) The monastery hosts a concert sung by the Piney Grove Baptist Church.
October 15-16, 2016 (Saturday) Sr’s. Roberta, Donna and Elizabeth attend the Pasco Early Childhood Conference.
October 13, 2016 (Thursday) Sr. Roberta attends a dinner meeting of the Saint Leo University Education Advisory Committee.

September 26, 2016 (Monday) SLU faculty member Dr. Francis Orlando gives a presentation to the Sisters after supper on how the two presidential candidates stand on Catholic social justice issues: pro-life, death penalty, immigration reform, preferential option for the poor etc.
September 25, 2016 (Sunday) The Sisters, Divya, Philo, John Barthle, Cheryl Chadick, Faith and Marshall Pridmore are guests of the Rays home game thanks to John Picciano and the Rays.
September 24, 2016 (Saturday) Sr. Helen is a special guest at supper and celebration of her 103rd birthday (her actual birthday is Sept. 28th and another party takes place at Heritage Park on that day). Sr. Miriam has made her an enormous card that everyone has signed. Supper is Sr. Helen’s favorite: chicken and rice, broccoli and red velvet cake for dessert.
September 19, 2016 (Monday) Sr. Mary David has a successful T4 conference with five other formaters. She is able to see and hear everyone through the use of her I-Pad.
September 16, 2016 (Friday) Oblate Sunday today. The date has been changed from the traditional 4th Sunday meeting so that the Sisters can go to a Rays game next Sunday.
September 15, 2016 (Thursday) Sr. Mary David and volunteer Barbara drive the two hours to the Geneva Classical Christian School in Winter Park, Florida. Sr. Mary David gives a presentation on St. Benedict and monasticism to 29 fourth graders. Sister and Barbara get lots of hugs and thank yous!
September 14, 2016 (Wednesday) Sr. Mary David shops to complete 5 more HOPE kits for Syrian refugees who will be settling in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The HOPE kits are sets of necessary household supplies for certain areas: kitchen, bathroom, etc.
September 12, 2016 (Monday) A full-page newspaper ad appears nationally in newspapers. The organization is “Catholic for Free Choice” and the text supports the “pro-choice” on the issue of abortion which is counter to the teaching of the Catholic Church. The article prompts several Sisters to write letters to the editor.
September 11, 2016 (Sunday) The Sisters open the 2016-2017 concert series with the “Friendship Singers”. The theme is patriotic and the concert is opened with a ROTC Honor Guard.
September 10, 2016 (Saturday) Sr’s, Mary Clare, Mary David and Volunteer Barbara attend a Life Ministry Workshop (“specially designed for parish Respect Life and Social Concerns Committees”) at Bethany Retreat Center from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Presentations are given on anti-abortion and human trafficking.
September 8-13, 2016 (Thursday) Sr. Eileen attends meeting of Benedictine Subprioresses in Norfolk, NE.
September 4, 2016 (Sunday) A group of Sisters (it’s an optional activity) watch a video of Sr. Joan Chittister discussing Chapter 72 of the rule (Good Zeal).
September 3, 2016 (Saturday) The council meets after breakfast. During the meeting they view an LCWR video “How Legacies May Be Preserved, and, Indeed, Resurrected” by Sr. Jean Bartunek, RSCJ
September 1, 2016 (Thursday) Hurricane Hermine brings rain both today and tomorrow. The retention pond (“Lake Mary Romana”) is full. The Sisters hold a “Care of Creation” at 7:00 pm on the dining room porch.
August 29, 2016 (Monday) Sr. Mary David successfully attends a T4 Zoom meeting (online meeting of Benedictine Sisters in Formation work). County Administrator Michele Baker gives a talk to the Sisters about Pasco County’s development plans and how those plans may affect the Sisters’ farm property. Owner’s Representative Frank Mezzanini is also there.
August 26, 2016 (Friday) Sr. Roberta attends a Care Plan meeting for Sr. Helen at Heritage Park Nursing Home.
August 25, 2016 (Thursday) Sr. Roberta attends the (military) Veterans reception, luncheon and Open House at SLU University.
August 19, 2016 (Friday) A conversation with new students (split into six groups-each group was there ½ hour) about Holy Name. St. Leo Abbey and SLU University Ministry is part of new student Orientation today. The sessions take place in the Abbey church and Sr. Mary David, Brother Stanislaus and Fr. Kyle facilitate. Brother Stan keeps mentioning that Sr. Mary David has been a sisters for 50 years to which she responds “I’m too young to be that old!”
August 18, 2016 (Thursday) The Sisters host a table with an informational display about Holy Name Monastery at the Saint Leo University (SLU) Matriculation/Reception for the new students in Bowman Gymnasium. Sr’s. Mary David and Roberta are there to greet the new students and their families.
August 15, 2016 (Monday) Sr. Roberta announces at supper that Sr. Elizabeth has successfully completed her Child Development Associate credential.
August 14, 2016 (Sunday) Divya Aradhyah arrives at the monastery to stay from India while she pursues a Masters in Cyber-security at Saint Leo University.
August 13, 2016 (Saturday) Sr. Mary David gives a Reflection Day of Mercy for 7 women from Christ the King Parish in Tampa 9:30 am -2:30 am. Janet Collura and Linda Gant are here to help with supper.
August 8, 2016 (Monday) Sr. Roberta leaves for the meeting of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) in Atlanta; she will return August 13th. Sr’s. Patricia Anne Driscoll, OSB and Andrea Verchuck, OSB of Bristow VA come for a noon prayer, lunch and a tour of the new building. Sr. Mary David attends a meeting at Saint Leo Abbey with Jennifer Garcia, Brother Stan and others to organize the presentation on Benedictine values to be given to the new Saint Leo University students at Orientation. Sr. Donna attends a Saint Leo Town Commission budget meeting at the Town Hall after supper.
August 7, 2016 (Sunday) Recollection Sunday. Sr. Mary David’s high school classmate Liz Ranieri, her husband, and their son James and James’ wife are guests for Sunday Mass and dinner. The Sisters listen to a video of Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB’s discussion of Chapter One of the Rule of Benedict at 3:45 pm. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at 4:30 pm followed by Evening Praise at 5:15 pm.
August 5, 2016 (Friday) Leadership Saint Leo comes to the monastery for a day-long workshop. The group of 21 Saint Leo University faculty and staff hear a presentation from both Sr. Mary David and Sr. Mary Clare. The group visits the Aquaponics with Sr. Miriam and join the Sisters for prayer and lunch before more presentations in the afternoon.
August 2, 2016 (Tuesday) Sr. Mary David meets with Fr. Kyle to discuss Benedictine presence on campus and ideas of how she might help.
July 31, 2016 (Sunday) Mass is at 10:30 am. The Sisters leave at 3:45 pm for Evening Praise, House Blessing, and supper at the home of Faith and Marshall Pridmore.
July 30, 2016 (Saturday) Community Days continue with committee meetings in the morning and reports from the committees in the afternoon. The Interim Visitation Report is approved by the community. There is discussion about how we might implement Goals 2,3 and 4 from the Visitation Report. Nutrition and menus are also discussed.
July 29, 2016 (Friday) Morning Praise is at 7:30 am followed by breakfast. Dr. Victor Harris (an extension specialist with the University of Florida) and Betsy Crisp (Pasco County Family and Consumer Sciences) do a presentation entitle “9 Important Communication Skills” at 9:30 am. Community Days continue after lunch with a conversation with Bob Hutchinson, Real Estate Office, Diocese of St. Petersburg, and Frank Mezzanini, our owner’s representative for the new addition. In the afternoon there is a discussion with the Advancement Office staff about Aquaponics and Goal #1 – continuing to communicate our work and mission).
July 28, 2016 (Thursday) Father Kyle Smith (Saint Leo University’s, Director of University Ministry) and seminarian Connor come for 6:30 am Mass and breakfast to meet the Sisters. Community Days begin with the Opening Prayer at 7:00 pm, and a discussion of an article from LCWR’s publication “Occasional Papers”. The evening concludes with a party entitled “In Celebration of Us”, an ice cream social hosted by Sr’s. Margaret Mary and Mary David.
July 23, 2016 (Saturday) The “So Old, Sew New” Sewing Group meets in the Multi-Purpose Room 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.
July 19, 2016 (Tuesday) Sr. Roberta attends a meeting of the Board of the Dade City Chamber of Commerce. Sr. Mary David visits Heritage Park Nursing Home to deliver some washed and ironed blouses. She also brings roses that Fred Hanson (the “Rose Man”) gave us as gifts.
July 17, 2016 (Sunday) This is the last of three Sunday Masses during which Sr. Mary David addresses attendees to ask them to write to Congress urging them to support the “Survive and Thrive” initiative. 25 letters are brought up with the bread and wine to be blessed before they are sent to Washington D.C. Three of the letters are from Sr. Helen, who is now 103 years old.
July 16, 2016 (Saturday) Sr’s. Dianne, Mary Romana, Roberta and Donna attend a farewell luncheon for Sisters Connie Coulter and Charia Ripple, SSND at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Ocala, FL. They are retiring from the Orlando Diocese and returning to the Motherhouse in Baltimore, MD.
July 11, 2016 (Monday) Feast of St. Benedict. The Sisters attend Mass and lunch at Saint Leo Abbey. They witness the first profession of Brother Lucius Amarillas, OSB. There they meet Father Kyle Smith, the new University Ministry Director at Saint Leo University. The Sisters also see Kathy DiSanto who has undergone a double mastectomy and 12 chemotherapy sessions.
July 10, 2016 (Sunday) Jennifer deCory and Marietta Dinopol are guests at the monastery for Morning Mass, dinner and a “Nurture Vocations” event from 1-5 pm.
July 9, 2016 (Saturday) Today is the 125th Anniversary celebration of the founding of the town of Saint Leo. A special Mass is celebrated at the Abbey Church at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon in the Saint Leo University Boardrooms. Sr’s. Roberta and Helen are guest speakers at the luncheon. Sr. Helen speaks about what is what like when she first arrived. Among the artifacts on display is a quilt made by the Benedictine Sisters for the 100th Anniversary of the town’s founding.
